Understanding the level of significance during data analysis

In quantitative research, the level of significance is a critical concept that determines whether your research findings are statistically meaningful.

The most commonly used significance level is 0.05 (or 5%), which means there is a 5% chance that the results occurred by random chance.

Key concepts:

1. P-value — This is the probability of obtaining results at least as extreme as the observed results, assuming the null hypothesis is true. If p < 0.05, we reject the null hypothesis.

2. Null Hypothesis (H0) — This is the default assumption that there is no relationship between variables. We test against this.

3. Alternative Hypothesis (H1) — This is what we're trying to prove — that a relationship exists.

4. Type I Error — Rejecting a true null hypothesis (false positive). The significance level controls this error rate.

5. Type II Error — Failing to reject a false null hypothesis (false negative).

Most Nigerian universities accept the 0.05 significance level for undergraduate projects. However, always confirm with your supervisor.
